Club Night Recap: Photo Series with Sarah Greene and Catherine Phillips

Our final Club Night of the year wrapped up in the best possible way — with creativity, storytelling, and an incredible lineup of photo series from our members. The Photo Series theme is always a special one for the Cathay Camera Club, and this year’s edition on Thursday, November 27 absolutely delivered.

We were delighted to welcome our guest judges, Sarah Greene, Director of Blue Lotus Gallery, and Catherine Phillips, Photo Editor at CNN Digital, who brought thoughtful critique, fresh perspectives, and sharp eyes to an evening full of narrative-rich submissions. Photo series nights are unique: instead of single images competing for attention, members are challenged to weave a story — visually, emotionally, and with intention.

Flash Interview: 7 Quick Questions with Sarah Greene & Catherine Phillips

To wrap up the evening, our guest judges joined us for a fast-paced “7 Questions” segment — a quick Q&A giving a peek into their perspectives and creative approach to photography judging.

1️⃣ Capture the moment or carefully compose?

  • Catherine: “Both. You have to firstly capture the moment first. But, it's in that split second that you do it that you need to compose a nice frame. If you work toward capturing the moment first, then good composition complements it.”

  • Sarah: “Carefully compose.”

2️⃣ One lens for the rest of your life, which one?

  • Catherine: “35mm on film or 23mm equivalent on full-frame.”

  • Sarah: “300mm for bird photography.”

3️⃣ Colour or Black & White?

  • Catherine: “Colour.”

  • Sarah: “Colour.”

4️⃣ Do you think gear matters?

  • Catherine: “Yes, but only if it requires the right gear for what you want to do. But, it entirely depends on your personal style or your purpose. It's not just about the highest specs.”

  • Sarah: “I second that.”

5️⃣ Who is your inspiration?

  • Catherine: “Kathy Ryan.”

  • Sarah: “Fan Ho.”

6️⃣ What is your most memorable moment in photography?

  • Catherine: “Because of my line of work, I am often exposed to a lot of memorable moments. However, whenever humans do good, those are the moments that I hold on to.”

  • Sarah: “Discovering Fan Ho's photography. Changed everything for me and really drew me into photography.”

7️⃣ Any advice for our Club Members at Cathay Camera Club?

  • Catherine: “Photography is a tool for communication. I would advise everybody to think really carefully about the story they want to tell or the concept they want to bring across and to use photography as the tool to do that.”

  • Sarah: “Be yourself. I think every person is unique and has a vision on this world. It's not really about honing your photography skills, it's about fine-tuning your perception of the world and being yourself in that process. If you can do that, your photography will be unique.”
